The Choral Union is a mixed voice (SATB) ensemble of 60-75 singers affiliated with the Department of Performing Arts at SUNY Cortland. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for Cortland students, faculty and staff to join adult volunteer singers of central New York in performing the masterworks of the choral tradition, under the direction of a trained, experienced professional conductor. While there is no audition required for membership, experience in and commitment to artistic choral singing is expected. All interested singers are welcome.

Rehearsals:

All rehearsals, held in room 108 of the Dowd Fine Arts Center of SUNY Cortland, begin promptly at 7:00PM every Monday evening and end no later than 9:00PM (although often they end at 8:45). However, there will be no rehearsal on September 25 and October 17. Rehearsals involving soloists, conductor and pianist are scheduled at separate times.

It is expected that all singers will bring a pencil with eraser to each rehearsal, and will mark scores lightly when directed by the conductor. No score should be marked in ink!

Rehearsal tapes/CDs that highlight individual voice parts will be available.

Attendance Policy:

The conductor recognizes that talented singers are usually busy people, whose time is much in demand. But attendance at virtually all rehearsals is necessary for an artistically rewarding performance. It is therefore hoped that singers will miss no more than three (3) rehearsals during the concert season. It is expected that when rehearsals are missed, the singer will compensate for the absence by working independently on the music before the subsequent rehearsal. The conductor pledges to avoid calling extra rehearsals except under the most extreme circumstances, and it is hoped that the singers will be equally diligent in attending scheduled sessions.

Donations:

There are no membership dues, and the music is loaned to singers free of charge, but it is urgently requested that members donate an amount of their choice to help pay for the services of our professional pianist. Donations can be given to the conductor, or directly to the pianist. Because this is a strictly voluntary contribution, no record of any kind will be kept of the donations.

Concert Attire:

Women will wear a long black skirt, black dress shoes, and white blouse (long sleeve is preferable).
Men will wear a dark suit (tuxedo, if you have one), white dress shirt, black bow tie and black dress shoes and socks.
